Medical Waste Services
Medical waste is a specialized waste stream that is regulated by various federal and state governmental agencies.Health care facilities, including hospitals, physician's offices, dental offices, veterinary hospitals and other clinics all generate medical waste that require special handling and disposal. Other facilities that often generate medical waste are laboratories/research centers, education facilities and pet shops. Medical waste is defined as either biohazardous or sharps.
- Biohazardous waste includes items such as fluid blood or fluid blood products, infectious secretions, laboratory waste, microbiology specimens, surgery specimens, animal parts or animal fluids contaminated with infectious agents known to be contagious to humans.
- Sharps waste includes items such as hypodermic needles, syringes, blades and needles with attached tubing, broken glass items, syringes contaminated with biohazardous waste, acupuncture needles, root canal files, or any other device capable of cutting or piercing.
The Medical Waste Regulatory Program provides regulations for the handling, storage, treatment, and disposal of medical waste in the State of Michigan. According to the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality's web site, "The objective of this program is to protect those persons who come into contact with medical waste from exposure to the risk of injury, infection, or disease that is created from improperly disposed medical waste. The Medical Waste Regulatory Program mandates how producing facilities of medical waste must manage their medical waste from the point at which it is generated to its ultimate disposal point. Generators of medical waste are required to register as producing facilities of medical waste under the Medical Waste Regulatory Program." Arch Environmental Group is a registered Producing Facility of Medical Waste – registration #40106.
